September is one of the best months for exploring Sardinia’s villages. The heat becomes less intense, coastal crowds begin to thin and the island’s inland calendar comes alive with local festivals, food events and cultural traditions.
A village itinerary can reveal a side of Sardinia that is easy to miss during a beach-only holiday: stone streets, archaeological remains, mountain landscapes and communities where local identity is still visible in everyday life.
What to look for
Barbagia is an obvious starting point, with towns known for traditional crafts, food, masks and autumn events. Elsewhere, villages near major archaeological areas can be combined with nuraghi, domus de janas and historic churches.
September also makes it easier to mix inland travel with the sea. A morning in a village can be followed by an afternoon on the coast without the extreme temperatures of midsummer.
Practical advice
Check local event dates before building the route because village festivals can change traffic and parking conditions. Staying overnight in smaller towns is often worthwhile, especially when evening events are part of the program.
The best September itinerary is not about covering as many places as possible. Choose a few villages, leave time for meals and walks, and use the journey between them as part of the experience.
