Sardinia’s travel season no longer ends abruptly with August. September has long been an excellent month, and October increasingly attracts visitors willing to trade guaranteed midsummer heat for space, lower pressure and a more local rhythm.
In September the sea normally remains warm and many coastal businesses are still operating. October is more variable, but stable periods can still deliver beautiful beach days, especially in the south.
Why late summer works
Roads are easier, famous beaches are less crowded and temperatures are often better for hiking, archaeology and city visits. Cagliari, Alghero and inland villages become easier to explore without organizing the entire day around heat.
Autumn also brings local food and cultural events that are largely absent from a classic August beach holiday.
What changes in October
Weather becomes less predictable and some seasonal businesses close or reduce hours. Travelers should therefore choose bases with year-round services and keep a flexible itinerary.
The reward is a different Sardinia: quieter, more spacious and better suited to mixing coast, villages, food and nature. For many independent travelers, that balance can be more valuable than peak-season certainty.
